Letter of Recommendation

To Whom It May Concern:
I am pleased to offer this letter of recommendation for Karla Hernandez. I have had the pleasure to get to know
Karla over the past two years, as her teacher and youth advocate through Mpower (a Colorado nonprofit
organization) and through her participation in the Asociación de Jóvenes Unidos en Acción (a youth led social
justice organization) and the Colorado Immigrant Rights Coalition. Karla has confided in me information
about her experiences, as a homeless youth and victim of domestic violence, that I feel is essential to generate
a picture of how extraordinary she is.
One would never know from her demeanor or social interactions that Karla is an unaccompanied youth. She
has surmounted incredible odds to reach where she is today. Her family life has presented a challenge for her
over the past several years. During her junior year of high school, Karla was asked to leave her house by her
mother. With nowhere to go, she ultimately ended up living with her boyfriend. Her boyfriend had a propensity
towards violence and had committed a number of legal offenses. He became emotionally and physically
abusive to Karla, ultimately resulting in her becoming homeless. With the assistance of others in the
community, Karla has been able to get back on her feet. Rather than taking on the role of victim, she became a
community organizer and activist.
Karla is a passionate champion of human rights, and an outspoken advocate for social justice. She is a
founding member of the Asociación de Jóvenes Unidos en Acción, and her civil rights work includes
advocating for undocumented immigrants and victims of both domestic violence and unjust law enforcement.
Most recently she has lobbied her District's Representative from the Colorado House of Representatives for
tuition equity for all Coloradans. Karla and her comrades secured the representative's support for a bill that
would provide in-state tuition for undocumented students. She has also lobbied two State Senators for the
same bill. In addition to her work lobbying, she has participated in several interviews about domestic violence
and unjust law enforcement practices. She also leads meetings and speaks in front of groups, including the
Garfield County Democratic Party.
Karla is a remarkable young woman. She never complains about her situation or uses it as an excuse. There is
no doubt that under more typical circumstances she would stand out from the crowd even more, based on her
academic prowess and service to the community. She cares deeply for others and believes in defending their
basic human rights. It is with great pride that I highly recommend Karla Hernandez. Her potential is limitless,
and I am confident that she will be successful in all of her endeavors. Please call me at (970) 618-3393 if I can
be of further assistance.
Sincerely,
Alec Raffin
